The Velcro holds the cover over the strap for the camera bag. The gel pads provide a soft cushion on my shoulder and distribute the force from the strap over a larger area. Prior to getting this strap cover, I was constantly struggling with the force of the strap on my shoulder and the side of my neck; it was painful. This strap cover makes it possible for me to have the strap on my shoulder, across my chest and back, so it is also against the side of my neck. This strap cover is a lifesaver, for being able to use my camera bag. That makes this strap cover very precious to me and the use of my camera bag. Don’t be put off by the term “guitar” strap shoulder pad. Works perfectly! I also really like that there is only a thin strip of velcro to hold it on the strap (it’s strong enough to keep it attached). The shoulder pad that originally came with my messenger bag had 2″-wide velcro, which made it stiff and it didn’t conform to my shoulder very well.
